Atlanterhavsparken, Ålesund

One of the last things we did while visiting the West Coast was looking at the wonderful creatures at Atlanterhavsparken (The Atlantic Ocean Park – Ålesund Aquarium). When I was little, this was a regular thing, and I loved it! However, it’s been many years since the last time I went now, so this was pretty much a trip down memory lane…

Atlanterhavsparken is one of Northern Europe’s biggest aquariums with salt water. They also have Europe’s biggest seal pool, and are apparently rated as Norway’s best aquarium. The park is home of only the sea creatures that you will find in Norwegian waters, by the coast and in the fjords (and some are from Svalbard I suppose). The extraordinary thing about this aquarium is actually the architecture – or the way the whole aquarium is kind of “built into” the surroundings. You’ll see what I mean when you see the following pictures!

//The indoor part of the park is pretty dark, which is good because it makes the azure blue aquariums and their colorful wildlife stand out! And it sets the right mood – the lack of light makes you feel like you’re actually deep, deep down under the surface…//

//The stones and rocks you can see in the background are real, and are actually protected rock types.//

//This basin is not profound and is actually there for you to touch the fish! The flatfishes are especially sociable.//

//Everything is very well described and explained, which makes it interesting for both children and adults.//

//You can watch the fish be fed regularly, and that way also learn a lot about the different types and their lives. They are being fed while the speaker talks, and the diver is almost constantly completely covered with fish, I mean actually totally invisible!!, the entire show! Talking about claustrophobic…//
